Councilmember Ysabel Jurado Leads Effort to Coordinate Public Safety in Downtown LA, Launches Task Force to Bring Together City, County, and Community Partners

LOS ANGELES – Los Angeles City Councilmember Ysabel Jurado announced today the launch of the Downtown LA Public Safety Hospitality Task Force, a coordinated effort bringing together city, county, and community partners to improve public safety coordination in Downtown Los Angeles.

“Public safety does not happen in isolation,” said Councilmember Ysabel Jurado. “We need city and county partners working together with residents and businesses to prevent issues before they escalate, and to build neighborhoods where everyone feels safe, supported, and connected.”

The announcement follows a weekend street takeover near L.A. Live that drew a large crowd and led to vandalism and violence at a nearby residential building.

“For residents who were woken up in the middle of the night, for the workers who were attacked while doing their jobs, and for the businesses that are dealing with the aftermath, this is unacceptable,” added Councilmember Jurado.

Downtown LA is not only a major economic engine – drawing businesses, workers, and visitors from across the region – it is also home to more than 90,000 Angelenos.

Jurado said the task force will focus on improving coordination among agencies responsible for public safety, homelessness, mental health, and community well-being, areas that serve the same communities but operate without the coordination needed to be fully effective.

Key Features of the Task Force:

  • Coordinated Approach: Brings together city, county, and community partners to address public safety, homelessness, mental health, and neighborhood.

  • Supporting Residents, Workers, and Visitors: Works directly with residents and community groups to ensure public spaces remain accessible, welcoming, and well-served.

  • Proactive Engagement: Identifies risks before incidents escalate, aligning resources to respond quickly and effectively.

  • Neighborhood Focus: Focused on high traffic areas for residents, businesses, and visitors, including 7th & Metro, the Financial District, and the Historic Core.

The task force will be led by Council District 14 and include representatives from the Mayor’s Office, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, public safety agencies, including the Los Angeles Police Department and the Metro Public Safety Department, and service providers working on housing, homelessness, and public health issues.

Residents, community partners, and local businesses will also participate in the effort.

The task force is expected to convene partners in the coming weeks and will coordinate strategies across city and county agencies.
