LOS ANGELES – Councilmember Ysabel Jurado issued the following statement in response to Governor Gavin Newsom's proclamation of a State of Emergency to support response and recovery efforts related to the ongoing Boyle Heights warehouse fire:
“The emergency declaration is necessary because Boyle Heights is dealing with more than a structure fire. This is a prolonged incident involving heavy smoke, hazardous debris concerns, environmental cleanup needs, and ongoing public health monitoring. For days now, residents have been living with smoke, disruptions to daily life, and uncertainty about what comes next. The declaration gives the City and our partners more flexibility to bring in the resources, equipment, services, and coordination needed to protect our community and support recovery.
The State of Emergency proclamation directs the California Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) and other state agencies to provide additional resources to support impacted residents and ongoing response efforts. These resources include:
- 5.5 million N95 respirator masks available for distribution to impacted communities.
- Commercial-grade air purifiers available for deployment to evacuation centers, community facilities, and other public spaces.
- Bottled water and other emergency supplies available through the state’s logistics network.
- Enhanced air quality monitoring and technical support resources.
Since the fire began, Councilmember Jurado and her team have been on the ground in Boyle Heights, going door to door to distribute masks and air purifiers, sharing timely updates, and helping residents access available resources.
