Councilmember Ysabel Jurado Announces Leading Global Engineering Firm to Fortify and Relight Sixth Street Bridge

Posted on 02/18/2026

LOS ANGELES – Councilmember Ysabel Jurado announced today that the Bureau of Engineering (BOE) has selected global engineering firm Tetra Tech to fortify and relight the Sixth Street Viaduct, also known as the Sixth Street Bridge.

Tetra Tech’s innovative design will fully restore lighting across the bridge while modernizing infrastructure to prevent vandalism and copper wire theft. Their enhanced framework strengthens the bridge in the long-term, fortifying wiring and installing a security camera system.

“When our streets are well-lit, our neighborhoods feel safer and more connected,” said Councilmember Jurado. “The Sixth Street Bridge plays a vital role in connecting Angelenos between the Eastside and the heart of the City. Partnering with Tetra Tech moves us one step closer to restoring one of the City’s most iconic landmarks as a safe, welcoming public space our communities deserve.”

Guided by the Councilmember’s vision for public service delivery and by the Bureau of Street Lighting’s assessment of the bridge, BOE led a comprehensive procurement process to identify industry-leading experts with experience in Los Angeles’ complex infrastructure.

Tetra Tech began design work under City direction in January 2026 and will collaborate closely with the department to implement this community-focused plan that includes:

  • Restoring wiring to all lights, including along roadways, barriers, ramps, stairways, and arches

  • Fortifying the pull boxes, service cabinet, and conduits to protect against copper wire theft

  • Installing a security camera system to deter vandalism and theft

  • Advancing construction on the Sixth Street Bridge’s lighting system, with completion scheduled before the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Today’s announcement follows the near completion of the Sixth Street PARC (Park, Arts, River & Connectivity) with a grand opening anticipated later this year. The project will create 12 acres of new green space in areas underneath and adjacent to the Sixth Street Bridge, making way for sports fields, fitness equipment, event spaces, and a performance stage. This space will expand access to public recreation spaces for Downtown LA and Boyle Heights residents, fostering stronger connections between communities and enriching shared cultural life.

In keeping with a vision rooted in community, Councilmember Jurado invited neighbors to share their input and choose the playground’s colors.
